In the News…
Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who is retiring at the end of the current Congress, voted against the nomination of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) chair Lauren McFerran. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer filed cloture last week to end discussion on an additional five-year term for McFerran. Had she been nominated and confirmed, Democrats would have maintained a majority into the new presidential term.
Returning to Capitol Hill to cast his vote, Senator Manchin was the deciding vote against the nomination, Senator Kyrsten Sinema being the other Independent to oppose it. Senator Manchin had cited disagreement with McFerran’s support of “joint employer” responsibility, which would make a corporation responsible for a fast food restaurant’s working conditions alongside the franchisee.
The current chair’s term expired this week. There is currently a Republican vacancy, making two nominations for President-elect Trump to make to the board.
